At the Port Credit Academy of Martial Arts, we are conveying a strong message to our community as to why everyone, including you, should learn Martial Arts. This idea, for me, isn’t new; I have been studying the Martial Arts for over forty years. I believe that everyone should learn Martial Arts, but did you know that there are some very specific reasons why the Martial Arts goes way beyond self-defense. It can help in nearly every aspect of your life - enhanced health and fitness, physical enrichment, increased confidence, better concentration, relaxation, and, better behavior. The list goes on and on.

This may sound too good to be true but it’s not!

As a matter of fact, many authorities agree that in this day and age of ever-increasing obesity, violence, dis-respect and a declining family structure, if you do nothing else, YOU should learn martial arts. The next few paragraphs will list the top nine reasons why this is true.

After reading and finding the 9 reasons enlightening and empowering, I suggest that you share it with your family, friends, and co-workers so they can discover why everyone should train in the Martial Arts.

1

SELF DEFENSE

“Train for battle so that I don’t have to” is an expression that is used to explain the self-defense benefits of training in the martial arts. This basically means that as we become more self-assured our ability to protect myself, the need too declines.

This is because you will begin to carry yourself in a more confident way. This self-assurance is projected to those around you, making you less susceptible to being picked on or by the criminal element.

On top of that, martial arts’ training incorporates deliberate self-defense tactics as well as actual self-defense skills. People are also trained in how to recognize potentially unsafe conditions and how to avoid conflicts.

2

Physical Success

Do you know the reason why so many professional players in major sport like the NFL, PGA, and the NBA complement their sport by training in the martial arts?

Martial arts training gives many physical rewards.

Most importantly, it is amazingly effective in improving overall co-ordination because it uses every part of the body in a balanced way. Upper body, lower body, right side, left side, forward, circumduction, forearm supination and pronation, ankle dorsiflexion and plantar flexion, lateral, rotational, flexion and extension, abduction and adduction movements, etc. it’s all included in martial arts training.

3

FITNESS

The five components that make up total fitness are cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Martial arts training develops a balance between all five. Therefore, a person who trains in martial arts will find that they progress rapidly. Also, because of the balance in the five components, they are less likely to hurt themselves while participating in other athletic activities.

4

HEALTH

There are proven studies about the connection between martial arts and better health for individuals of all ages. The reasons for this are as follows. First, it is an awesome exercise, and, unlike other ‘boring and repetitive’ workouts, people enjoy the systematic approach of training in the martial arts. Also, most martial arts programs include suggestions on nutrition and lifestyle changes, so long-term training develops healthful practices that people enjoy for life.

5

FRIENDS

Martial artists feel a strong sense of camaraderie and friendship with their fellow classmates. Camaraderie is an unspoken promise, a certain interaction that allows a group of individuals to get along which each other.

Since the martial arts is practiced in a group setting, there are many opportunities to spend time together. You share the same experiences, cross the same paths, and build strong relationships that stand the test of time.

6

RELAXATION

The Port Credit Academy of Martial Arts progressive system, called GOJU (HARDSOFT) is the perfect discipline for those who really want a more relaxed lifestyle. Combining fitness, breathing techniques, and a attitude of harmonious living that develops ways for you to relax and escape from the stress of work and everyday problems, while leading a better life.

7

CONCENTRATION

Very few activities engage the mind, body, emotions, and spirit more than martial arts. Because of this, a person’s ability to focus is significantly heightened by their martial arts training and this attentiveness is easily exchangeable with all other activities in life.

8

RESPECT AND COURTESY

Identifying that martial arts teaches movements and concepts that could be dangerous to others if used, martial arts teachers emphasize the importance of respect, courtesy, consideration, and control. People who are accomplished in the martial arts are usually particularly respectful, thoughtful, calm and controlled.

9

CONFIDENCE

Martial arts taught and practiced properly, leads to better confidence for a couple of reasons. First, there are no bench-warmers. Everyone student gets involved. Second, rather than comparing one student to another, students are evaluated on their own potential.

Lastly, the progressive systematic approach of training at the Port Credit Academy of Martial Arts is built on the ideas of preparing people for accomplishment. We give a student short-term goals that they can achieve quickly while still focusing on an exhilarating, long-term goal, like earning their Black Belt. Each time they achieve success, their confidence advances until they understand and believe that, with hard work and dedication, they can achieve anything they set their minds too!

At the Port Credit Academy of Martial Arts, we teach a way of life. For over 30 years our professional Martial Arts system is a well thought out curriculum that teaches more than just the art of self-defense. We delve deep into our students’ technique, skill set, confidence, concentration, intelligence, intuition and overall physical fitness.
