Meet Anita Koczekan – First Degree Black Belt
Anita’s journey with the Port Credit Academy of Martial Arts started back in 2008. At the time, she wasn’t thinking about earning a black belt or mastering techniques – she just wanted a good workout, so she signed up as a cardio kicker. But as she got to know the people around her, something changed.
Taking on the Challenge
One day, someone in the dojo encouraged her to try karate, insisting she could do it. That little nudge sparked a fire in her, and she took up the challenge. What she found in karate wasn’t just physical training – it was a mental and spiritual journey too. That combination made a big difference to her, and it was something she hadn’t found in other dojos.
Why the Dojo Feels Like Home
What truly stood out to Anita was the sense of acceptance. There was no judgment – not about age, experience, or ability. When she started training at 50, that openness made all the difference. She felt welcomed as herself, and that made her martial arts journey feel natural and meaningful.
Giving Back as an Assistant
Now as a black belt, Anita assists in youth classes, passing on what she’s learned to the next generation. She doesn’t just teach – she learns from the students too. Giving back to the community is a huge part of why she continues training. Martial arts has become part of her identity – it keeps her fit, sharp, and deeply connected to the dojo family.
A Challenge Worth Taking
If you’re over 35 and wondering whether martial arts is for you, Anita says to just go for it. It might seem daunting at first, but it’s a decision that can change your life. Looking back, she knows that accepting that challenge was one of the best choices she ever made.
Why Keep Training?
Anita keeps coming back because martial arts is now part of who she is. It’s not just about staying active – it’s about staying engaged mentally and giving back to the community. For her, it’s all about making the world a little bit better, one class at a time.
