Founder & Hanshi (Chief Instructor)
Hanshi began his martial arts journey at age 13. What started as a passion quickly became a lifelong mission—one that has spanned nearly five decades, over 40 years of teaching, and international recognition as a martial arts and personal safety expert.
As the founder of the Port Credit Academy of Martial Arts, Hanshi holds a 9th-degree black belt and has trained thousands of students. His teaching blends traditional Goju Ryu Karate Do with modern personal development, offering students not just fitness and self-defense, but confidence, discipline, and leadership that lasts a lifetime.
Over the years, he has studied with some of the most respected martial artists in the world, including Hanshi Tetsuhiro Hokama in Okinawa, Sensei Peter Urban in the USA, and Jean-Yves Thériault in Canada. In 1996, he received the prestigious title of Shihan, and Hanshi in 2022.
Hanshi Doyle’s dedication led him to break a world record, smashing 495 boards in 60 seconds, featured on CNN, CTV, and international television stations. He’s also known for creating the Listen & Learn child safety program, leading corporate team-building workshops and seminars, and developing future leaders both in and out of the dojo.
He’s the author of Parenting Secrets from the Dojo and the children’s comic Yakomoto and the Red Dragon. He’s been featured in the Toronto Star, National Post, and on Canada AM, and was nominated for the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award for his commitment to community safety.
Hanshi has personally graded over 450 black belts and oversees training for hundreds of active members and families each week. With every class, seminar, workshop, and speech, his goal remains the same: to help each student realize their best self—mentally, physically, and spiritually.
“The Martial Arts Are Good For You,” he says. And after training with Hanshi Doyle, it’s easy to understand why.
If you’re looking for proof that the martial arts can transform lives, meet Shihan Lesa Doyle.
A certified 7th-degree black belt with the Okinawa and International Goju Ryu Karate-Jutsu Association and PCAMA, Shihan Lesa has dedicated 38 years to helping students grow—not just in physical strength, but in mindset, spirit, and confidence. She is the co-owner of the Port Credit Academy of Martial Arts with her husband and Chief Instructor, Hanshi Christopher Doyle.
Having overcome severe asthma through her training, Lesa is known for her fun, high-energy teaching style that emphasizes proper technique, self-defense, and fitness.
She is a proud mother of two and has played a key role in building one of Canada’s most respected and professional martial arts academies.
Founder of the Kardio Kicks® program, she also spearheads and organizes charity events for the community, especially in support of local food banks.
From skydiving, hot yoga, marathon running, and championship pickleball, to cross-training, personal training (CanFitPro certified), relaxing with music, reading, and enjoying nature—Shihan Lesa brings energy to everything she does.
She finds fulfilment in seeing white belts grow into Port Credit “AMA”ZING black belts, each reaching for their personal best.
Shihan (Senior Instructor)
With nearly 36 years of continuous training at the Port Credit Academy of Martial Arts, Shihan Mercier is one of the longest-standing and most respected instructors at the dojo. Holding the rank of 7th-degree black belt (Shichidan), she brings a lifetime of knowledge, adaptability, and warmth to every class.
Shihan’s teaching spans all ages—from energetic 6-year-olds to focused adults. With younger students, she thrives on finding creative, playful ways to keep training fun and meaningful. Seeing their eyes light up after earning a stripe or belt is one of her greatest joys. With teens and adults, she loves diving deep into kata and self-defense—breaking down movements and discovering new layers of detail together.
Her own training continues to evolve. Even after decades in the dojo, Shihan still finds something new in the basics, proving that martial arts is a lifelong journey of refinement and growth.
Before becoming a full-time instructor, Shihan built a successful career in transportation and logistics. Her diverse background has shaped her ability to connect with students from all walks of life. Today, she teaches and works as a dedicated team member at the Academy.
Outside the dojo, she enjoys reading, walking, movies, and community theatre. She has also spent time canoeing, dancing, and exploring other forms of movement and art.
Shihan Mercier’s presence reflects experience, humility, and joy in teaching—making her an enduring and inspirational figure at PCAMA.
Shihan (Senior Instructor)
With over 35 years of continuous training at the Port Credit Academy of Martial Arts, Shihan Mercier holds the rank of 7th-degree black belt (Shichidan) and is one of the Academy’s most experienced and committed instructors.
Shihan began his martial arts journey with no prior experience—just a few friends and a shared idea: “Let’s earn our black belts.” It was Shihan who found the dojo, and decades later, he’s still here—teaching, training, and inspiring others. What keeps him going? Helping students learn new katas and techniques and watching their confidence grow, especially as they push toward their next belt.
As a contractor and carpenter by trade, Shihan brings a strong work ethic and team mentality into the dojo. He thrives on taking on challenging tasks—on the job site and on the dojo floor—and leading others to success. He’s especially committed to helping students prepare for belt gradings through private lessons and impromptu kata sessions.
Outside the dojo, Shihan’s passion is riding motorcycles. Known for his humor and storytelling, he’s the first to admit: ask him a question about karate, and he can go on for hours.
His personal mantra, “Your life, your goals, your choice,” reflects his no-nonsense, deeply committed approach to both life and martial arts.
Shihan’s leadership, loyalty, and love for teaching continue to shape generations of black belts at PCAMA.
