From Shy to Strong — Braydon’s Journey Through the Martial Arts
Braydon began training at age 4. Now a confident teen leader at Port Credit Academy of Martial Arts, his story proves how karate can build discipline, resilience, and lasting impact.
Student Spotlight: Braydon — Confidence Forged Through Commitment
At just four years old, Braydon walked into his very first karate class—encouraged by his preschool teacher, now known at the dojo as Senpai Croteau. At the time, he was shy, quiet, and unsure of himself.
Fast forward a decade, and now at 14 years old, Braydon is a confident, articulate young martial artist who credits karate for shaping who he is today:
“I used to be really shy and had no friends. Since I’ve started training, I’m way less shy, more confident, and more disciplined. It’s helped me in school, sports, and in life.”
His story is one of perseverance through challenge. Like many young students, Braydon hit a rough patch during COVID lockdowns, when online classes felt disconnected and motivation was hard to find.
“I was a blue belt with no stripes… I thought about quitting. But I realized—I’ve come this far. And if you quit, it’s over forever. But if you keep going, it’ll never be over.”
Braydon chose to continue, and that decision became a turning point.
Today, one of his favorite parts of training is kata, which he describes as:
“A very disciplined way to learn and advance your technique.”
He also loves helping others in class—whether it’s assisting a newer student or setting an example for his younger sister, who now trains alongside him.
“Training with family adds challenge and motivation. You want to stay ahead of them, help them, and push yourself to be better.”
Outside the dojo, Braydon leads an active life: Football, Basketball, Golf, Volleyball, Tennis, Piano, Water skiing, and Fishing
Despite a packed schedule, he continues to show up, improve, and inspire others in the dojo.
His message to anyone thinking about starting martial arts?
“Once you start, you’ll never regret it. It may be hard at first, but after your first class or first stripe, you’ll just want to keep going.”
